Groundbreaking
Set for Accountability and
Restitution
Center
OLYMPIA
– The public is invited to the groundbreaking
for
Thurston
County
’s new satellite corrections facility in Tumwater.
The event will be held at Noon on Friday, November 30th in the
Mottman
Industrial Park
near the county’s Family and Juvenile Court and the Coroner’s Office.
The Accountability and Restitution Center
(ARC) has been in the planning stages for several years and is the culmination
of a multitude of meetings and other interactions with the public, all
jurisdictions within the county and the Law and Justice Community.
Construction costs are estimated at $35 - $40 million and will be
funded through voter-approved detention sales tax revenues.
Thurston County Chief Administrative Officer
Don Krupp says the new corrections facility will help solve a problem that has
plagued the county for decades. “We
have dealt with severe overcrowding at the current county jail for many, many
years. It was never designed to
hold so many inmates and the infrastructure is falling apart.
The ARC will allow us to address the overcrowding and many of the
associated issues. It is the most
cost effective, long term solution that we could design.
It will also contribute to public health and safety, and the citizens
have told us that is a very high priority.”
The 100,000 square foot, one-story facility
will be built on property owned by the county at
3285 Ferguson Street SW
in Tumwater. Physical
Elements of the ARC include:
- Central booking/intake/assessment/release/transfer
- Central kitchen
- Video appearance court
- Central medical
- Central control
- Building support
- Jail administrative
offices
- Inmate housing
currently planned to be:
- 4 64-bed dormitory units
-
1 64-cell unit
- Inmate programs
The ARC is tentatively scheduled to open in 2010.
