Bid Awarded for Construction of a Thurston County Corrections Facility

OLYMPIA – Thurston County Commissioners this morning awarded the contract for construction of a new corrections facility.  The Accountability and Restitution Center (ARC) is being built on property owned by the county in the Mottman Industrial Park area of Tumwater.

The contract was awarded to Pease Construction of Lakewood.  The company, in business since 1984, has extensive experience in public sector projects.  ARC Project Manager Robyn Sederberg says the references for the company were very good.  “They were characterized as professional, cooperative, efficient, experienced and good to work with, so we feel comfortable going forward with them at the helm of this project.”

Phase One of the project will be 104,000 Square Feet and will include-

·        Four 64-bed dorms,

·        One 96-bed maximum custody unit,

·        Kitchen,

·        Booking,

·        Medical,

·        Laundry,

·        Administrative Offices,

·        Classroom space for GED, Chemical Dependency and other programs

·        Video Arraignment,

·        Video Visitation,

Thurston County Chief Administrative Officer Don Krupp says this is a vital step in continuing to provide for the health and safety of county residents.  “We have been struggling with this issue for many, many years and the ARC is the most affordable, longest term solution for the current jail, which is severely overcrowded and very dilapidated.  Fortunately, we have some sources of revenue dedicated just for facilities construction that we can tap into for this project.  We still face challenges in staffing the ARC but we will make it work with additional careful analysis and the cooperation of the law and justice community.”
