Special TV Shows on the Budget
OLYMPIA
– Facing some difficult spending choices, Thurston County Commissioners have
focused their next two monthly television shows on the budget.
The county does the “Thurston County Connection” TV show each month
in conjunction with Thurston Community Television, typically using the program
to explain offices and departments of county government or to talk about
emerging issues like West Nile Virus. This
time around the April and May programs will feature in-depth information on
the county’s spending plan and challenges with that plan.
Chief Administrative Officer Don Krupp says there
are four main themes within the two programs.
“In April we will explain what programs and services are provided to
taxpayers by the county and where the money comes from to do that.
Then, in May, we will go into detail about the nearly
$4-million
shortfall we see coming up in the 2009 budget and also the process the county
will go through to deal with the revenue challenges.
It’s unusual for us to do TV shows like this but we find ourselves in
an unusual position.”
Krupp says it’s important that county residents
watch the TV show if they can and otherwise track the budget process.
“We realize that the budget is complex and confusing at times,
that’s why it’s key for folks to learn as much as they can, so they can
provide guidance to us as we go through some difficult decision making.
What we decide will impact everyone who lives in
Thurston
County
and we need advice to find the proper balance in future service delivery.
We will, of course, have many opportunities for people to comment, but
it would be good if they were as informed as possible about what it is that
county government is facing.”
The April budget program begins airing on the 18th
and the May show airs first on May 16th.
Each program airs on TCTV on Comcast Cable Channel 3 for a month-
