County’s Residential Burning Program Begins Oct. 16

OLYMPIA—The countywide residential outdoor burning permit program is scheduled to start its second “season” October 16. That’s the message from county fire district officials and the county.

Under the program’s guidelines, burning of residential yard debris is prohibited in Thurston County from July 15 through October 15. It is also prohibited during any burn bans for fire safety or poor air quality episodes.

County residents will be able to obtain free residential outdoor burning permits Thursday, October 16, from their local fire district offices.

The program’s rules apply only to residential outdoor burning of natural vegetation in all unincorporated areas within the county, outside the Urban Growth Boundaries of Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater. All eligible county residents must possess a free permit for these fires. Rules of the program are printed on the permits. Failure to obtain a permit or not following permit instructions can result in a fine.

Brochures and other information about the program are available at county fire stations, the Thurston County Permit Assistance Center, and the Olympic Region Clean Air Agency.

Residents are encouraged to pursue alternatives to outdoor burning, such as chipping, grinding, or composting.
