County Residents Urged to Use Fireworks Safely

OLYMPIA – “It is a tragic event when a family celebration of Independence Day turns into a frantic call to 9-1-1 and a trip to the hospital.”  So says Thurston County Medic One Director Steve Romines.  “Unfortunately, we see that situation every Fourth of July because someone was careless with fireworks which resulted in burns or worse injuries.”  Romines suggests that some pre-planning and precautions can prevent such tragedies.

The precautions include-

·        Using only “safe and sane” fireworks.  In Washington State that means no bottle rockets, no firecrackers, no cherry bombs and no missiles.

·        Having an adult present at all times that fireworks are being set off and not allowing young children to light the fireworks.

·        Keeping a safe distance away from lit fireworks.

·        Not holding or throwing fireworks after they are lit.

·        Not re-lighting fireworks that did not go off the first time.

There is also danger of igniting a fire with fireworks.  Fire District Three Chief Jim Broman says, “Flammable materials such as brush, grass, wood, paper, clothing, even the upholstery of automobiles, are easily and quickly ignited by the incendiary heat of most fireworks.”  Broman recommends that families leave the discharge of fireworks to professionals at licensed public displays.  However, if you do intend to use them you should follow these guidelines-

·        Use fireworks outdoors, away from flammable materials.

·        Have a garden hose or fire extinguisher available anytime fireworks are being used.

·        Place used fireworks in a tub of water.

·        Know to “stop, drop and roll” if clothing catches on fire.

·        If you have an injury, or if fire starts, call 9-1-1 immediately.

In the unincorporated areas of Thurston County, it is legal to sell fireworks from June 28th through noon on July 6th.  It is legal to discharge fireworks ONLY from 9 AM to 11 PM on July 3rd and 4th.
