Victims of
Last Year’s Floods invited to Apply for Home Elevation Grants
OLYMPIA
–Certain
residents of the Chehalis and
Deschutes
River basins
in
Thurston
County
are invited to a special meeting to find out about
Thurston
County
’s Flood Elevation Grant Program. This
program is for homeowners in those watersheds
whose homes were damaged during the December 2007 flood.
Thurston
County
has received an $811,000 grant from the Washington State Department of
Community, Trade and Economic Development to elevate homes in the
Chehalis
River
and
Deschutes
River
watersheds. The funding is
in the form of a grant, will not require repayment and participation in the
program is completely voluntary. The
Flood Elevation Grant Program provides up to $25,000 to help defray the cost
of elevating homes to the correct standards under the National Flood Insurance
Program. This consists of lifting
the home and constructing a code compliant foundation to support the home
above flood water levels. The
program is limited to individuals whose income is below 80 % of
Thurston
County
’s median income living in the watersheds.
At the meeting on
December 4th, Thurston County Commissioners and Development
Services staff will describe the process for taking part in the Flood
Elevation Grant Program and will answer questions.
Those interested
in the grants are asked to fill out a confidential form based on their 2008
income. The information will be
used to determine Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic
Development income eligibility.
