Grant Money Available in Thurston County Health Project

OLYMPIA -- As part of a larger effort to encourage healthy lifestyles, Thurston County Public Health and Social Services is making mini-grants available to qualified local organizations.  The grants, which total $50,000, are part of the “Steps to a HealthierUS” program, which was launched in Thurston County in 2003.  The program focuses on ways to increase the health of community members including making good nutrition choices, undertaking exercises like walking and fighting chronic illnesses like asthma, obesity and diabetes.

The grants are available for three kinds of projects-

ü      Walking Partner Project and Walkable Places Assessment and Action projects.

ü      Healthier Youth Out-of-School time enrichment projects.

ü      Healthy STEPS Community Partner projects.

The grants will be awarded in a competitive process after applications are accepted and reviewed.  There are many types of organizations who may qualify for one of the mini-grants.  They include- Schools, Neighborhood Associations, Colleges, Government Offices, Tribal Organizations, Faith-based Groups, Parent-Teacher Associations, Youth Groups and others.

Interested parties must follow guidelines to apply for a mini-grant.  The details and a downloadable application can be found on the Thurston County Public Health and Social Services web site at http://www.co.thurston.wa.us/health/steps/funding.html

Or parties can call Mary Ann O’Garro at 360-786-5581 Ext. 17038#.  She can also be contacted by e-mail at ogarrom@co.thurston.wa.us.

The deadline for the grant applications is January 28th 2005.
