HEARING SET FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT

OLYMPIA -- Thurston County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing at 10:00 a.m. October 1, 2001 to hear presentations and take testimony on projects proposed to receive state Community Development Block Grant funding (CDBG). The hearing will take place in Room 280, Building 1 of the Thurston County Courthouse.

The county began soliciting project proposals in August. At the public hearing, the Commissioners will hear presentations and take testimony on projects submitted by the Sept. 19th deadline. A project list will be available by noon Sept. 21st by calling 709-3065.

Proposed projects must principally benefit low- and moderate-income persons, must prevent or eliminate slums or blight, or meet an urgent need to protect public health and safety.  Project activities must benefit residents of unincorporated Thurston County, and may center on housing, economic development, community facilities, public facilities and infrastructure, and public services.

After the hearing, commissioners may select a project to sponsor as an application for state CDBG funds.  A public meeting will be held in November on the selected project application, prior to submittal of the final application package due to the state Office of Community Development by November 15, 2001.

Thurston County may sponsor and submit an application on behalf of another entity, after a public hearing and deliberation process.  The county may only submit one application.

For more information about the public hearing, contact Thurston County Office of Program and Budget Development at (360) 709-3065. Citizens with disabilities who need accommodation at the public hearing should call (360) 786-5440 by September 24, 2001. The county’s TDD number is 754-2933.
