County Adds Historical Pages To Web Site
OLYMPIA – Those seeking information and images
regarding the history of Thurston County can now find it easily on their
computers by visiting the Thurston County Web Site. The county received many requests for such information on the
government pages and the section was recently created.
“We have tons of information on the county web
site, a lot of which provides direct business and residential services to
county residents. But we did
receive a lot of interest in some historical information and we’re pleased
to be able to offer it,” says county spokesman John Tennis.
“There are a lot of other great web sites out there with Thurston
County historical information, but ours may be a bit more photograph oriented.
We hope that’s of interest to folks.
We would like to thank the Washington State Historical Society and the
Thurston County Historic Commission for their cooperation in putting the pages
together.”
The web site contains numerous photographs from
the early years of Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater, Bucoda, Grand Mound, Yelm,
Rainier, Tenino and many other locations.
In addition, there are historic maps and descriptions and links to
other historic web sites. Surfers
can also find information on the “Thurstoneers Certificate” program, which
recognizes descendants of persons who resided in Thurston County by 1852 or by
1902.
The county is also seeking historic photographs
for use on the site. “If anyone
has pictures that help tell the history of the county, we would be interested
in borrowing the photos to create digital images for display on the pages,”
says Paul Henderson of the county Information Services Department.
“ We will take good care of the pictures while we have them and then
return them to the owner. More information on how to donate an image is contained on
the web pages.”
