Thurston County District Court Judge Receives Special Honor

OLYMPIA -- Thurston County District Court Judge Brett Buckley recently, was named Judge of the Year by the Misdemeanant Corrections Association (MCA).  The recognition came on May 6, 2008 at MCA’s annual conference in Chelan.  Judge Buckley was honored for his leadership as the Chair of the District and Municipal Court Judges Association legislative committee.  The Association was instrumental in passing legislation clarifying that misdemeanant probation officers’ liability attaches only for gross negligence in the conduct of their duties.

The MCA was organized in 1971 by misdemeanant probation directors to enhance the quality, continuity and effectiveness of probation services within Washington State .  One of the goals of MCA is the development and support of legislation pertaining to misdemeanant corrections programs.

Judge Buckley has been a strong supporter of community-based domestic violence prevention and mental health and DUI treatment programs which focus on individual responsibility in holding perpetrators accountable for their own behavior.

Judge Buckley served as a Court Commissioner in District Court for about ten years.  In March of 2006 he was sworn in as the county’s newest District Court Judge, joining Kip Stilz and Sue Dubuisson on the bench.
