Latino Youth
Summit Scheduled
OLYMPIA -- The Hispanic/Latino
community is developing quickly around the country. Between 1990 and 2000 the Latino/Hispanic population
increased 105.8% in Washington State. It
now represents the largest growing ethnic community in Washington. (2000
Census) With that in mind, La
Mesa Redonda (The Hispanic Roundtable) will be hosting the 2003 Latino
Youth Summit: Abriendo Puertas y Ventanas. This event takes place
on November 7, 2003 at the Shelton Civic Center, 525 W. Cota, Shelton ~ from
1:00 – 9:00 p.m. The theme of
the conference is Abriendo Puertas y Ventanas/Opening Doors and Windows (of
opportunity). The conference is
targeting Hispanic/Latino youth 14 to 19 years of age living within Thurston,
Lewis and Mason Counties.
The purpose of the conference
is to encourage Hispanic/Latino youth to complete high school and seek higher
education. The conference will
also include discussions around leadership, the dangers of drugs/alcohol,
resources for pursuing a college education and other culturally related
topics. The conference will be in
both English and Spanish.

La Mesa Redonda
is a local, civic organization comprised of professionals who meet for the
purpose of supporting individuals, agencies and programs that are serving the
Hispanic Community. For

The conference is
sponsored and coordinated by the Hispanic Roundtable. Thurston County Public Health, the Washington State Division
of Alcohol and Substance Abuse and other private and non-profit community
agencies have allocated funding for the event.
