New Locations for Some Thurston County Health Programs

OLYMPIA – Several programs of Thurston County Environmental Health are relocating from the main courthouse complex on Lakeridge Drive to the Public Health building at 412 Lilly Road NE in Olympia .

The programs are being relocated to fill space that became available due to staff reductions in the Public Health and Social Service Department. Relocating these programs will save the Health Department more than $30,000 per year in rental charges. The move also makes space available at the main courthouse for other county programs that are currently renting off campus.

The Health Department programs that are moving include-

  • Food and Environmental Services, which includes:
    • Restaurant permitting, including Temporary Food Establishment Permits
    • Swimming Pools and Spas
    • School plan review and services
    • Animal bite reports and vector issues ( West Nile virus, rodents, etc.)
  • Solid Waste
  • Hazardous Waste
  • Environmental Education
  • Environmental Health Administration

Beginning October 26, food, school, and pool permit applications, including temporary food applications and plan reviews, will need to be submitted at the Public Health building at 412 Lilly Road NE across from Saint Peter Hospital .

Phone numbers for all Public Health and Social Services are changing as part of a larger Thurston County plan to update phone service. The new numbers will be in place November 1st. People who call the “old” numbers will be redirected to the new phone number, or they can call the following and be routed to staff:

Lilly Road : 360-867-2500 (general) or 360-867-2667 (Environmental Health)

Building One: 360-867-2626

The times and locations of the Food Handler’s classes will remain the same. A food handler class schedule is available by calling the food message line at 360-867-2665 (new number) or 360-786-5590 (old number).  Those interested can also find information at the Food Handler website: http://www.co.thurston.wa.us/health/ehfood/pdf/ClassSchedule.pdf

Several Environmental Health programs will remain at the main Courthouse Complex on Lakeridge Drive . These include:

  • Adjacent to the Permit Assistance Center in Building One:
    • On-site Sewage (septic system) Permitting
    • Drinking Water Land Use review
    • Drinking Water Lab
  • In Building Four:
    • Surface and Ground Water monitoring
    • Sewage System Operation and Maintenance

The moves are currently underway and all programs that are changing address should be in operation at their new location by the end of October.

Hours of Operation:

Permit Assistance Center hours (at the main county campus) are 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, Monday thru Friday.  After hours appointments can be setup with individual staff.
