Oberquell Elected to Statewide Post
OLYMPIA
– Thurston County Commissioner Diane Oberquell has been
elected chair of The Washington Emergency
Management Council (EMC). The EMC
has the responsibility to advise the governor and the director (Adjutant
General) of the Washington Military Department on all matters pertaining to
state and local emergency management. The seventeen members on the EMC
are appointed by the governor and represent the interests of state and local
government, emergency services, industry, the environment and more.

The EMC meets the first Thursday
of every other month, beginning with the annual meeting in January, to review
the State of
Washington
's emergency preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery programs and
issues. The EMC reports to the governor on statewide preparedness issues
including hazard mitigation, seismic safety improvements, flood hazards
reduction, homeland security, and hazardous materials planning and response
activities. The EMC and committees are administered and supported by staff
from the Washington State Emergency Management Division.
Commissioner Oberquell was
appointed to the Council to represent county government (
County
Commissioners
, County Council members and county executives) by former Governor Gary Locke
in September, 2001.
