Pesticide-Free
Signs Available for Common Sense Gardeners
Thurston
County: Many
Thurston County residents have asked about the “Pesticide-Free for Healthy
Communities” signs seen along East Bay drive.A limited number of these signs is now available to county residents
pledging to practice Common Sense Gardening.
Common Sense Gardening is based on
Integrated Pest Management techniques, which use pesticides only as a last
resort. Common Sense Gardening is
based on creating healthy soil with organic matter that will support healthy
plants.It suggests selecting
plants adapted to our climate and planting them in areas where they will
thrive. Common Sense Gardening uses barriers and traps to deal with unwanted
pests rather than chemicals that can cause health and environmental concerns.Unacceptable weeds are pulled or killed using less-toxic products such
as weed torches and corn gluten meal. Using the least toxic solution to deal
with pests and weeds is a common sense choice for folks concerned about health
and the environment.
If you are a long time Common
Sense Gardener or just making the switch, you can display a sign telling
passersby that your yard is pesticide-free.For more information on pledges, signs, or to get help switching to
Common Sense Gardening, call Thurston County Environmental Health at (360)
