Large
turn-out for Community Recycle Days
OLYMPIA
– The two Community Recycle Days events this month at South Sound Speedway
and the Thurston County Fairgrounds brought out approximately 1,000 people who
recycled a variety of household items, including microwave ovens, which were
accepted for the first time at the events.
Among the items
brought in during the two-day events were:
- 680
computer monitors and TVs
- 440
pieces of office equipment (printers, copiers, CPUs)
- 180
electronic items (stereos, VCRs, DVDs)
- 150
microwave ovens
- 160
refrigerators and freezers
- 235
washers, dryers and dishwashers
- 260
lawn mowers
- 920
yards of scrap metal
- 1,345
tires
Those who missed
Community Recycle Days can still recycle most of these items at the
Thurston County Waste and
Recovery
Center
. (WARC) Although people are
charged regular garbage rates for items such as scrap metal (including lawn
mowers), there is a bin designated for scrap metal. The scrap metal placed in
this bin will be recycled. Tires
(limit of 5 per day), computer monitors, TVs and appliances can also be
recycled at the WARC for a charge. For
those with many tires, contact a tire company directly, such as L&S Tire
at (253) 582-5556.
There are several
companies that accept items such as computers, TVs and lawnmowers for repair
and re-sale. Also, there are
non-profit groups that collect bicycles for worthy causes.
For microwaves, CPU’s, and electronics there are a few companies such
as Total Reclaim (206) 343-7443 or Jaco Environmental at 1-800-414-5072, which
will recycle them for a charge.
For more
information on where to take recyclable or re-useable items, check the
“brown pages” in the front of the Dex phone book for recycling options, or
visit www.co.thurston.wa.us/wwm.
