Open house on
county
stormwater
program and rates set for July 15
OLYMPIA
–
Thurston
County
will host an open house to discuss water resource programs and a proposed
change in stormwater utility rates on Wednesday, July 15, from 6 p.m. to 8
p.m. at the Thurston County Fairgrounds Expo Hall,
3054 Carpenter Road S.E.
Under the
proposal, the existing base rate for an average single-family residence would
increase from $2.75 per month to $3.70 per month in 2010, and gradually reach
$5.33 by 2014. Commercial properties would also see an increase, but a
proposed credit program could reduce rates significantly for commercial
property owners who take extra steps to reduce polluted stormwater runoff.
Thurston
County
officials are
considering the rate proposal to improve the county’s ability to comply with
strict mandates under the federal Clean Water Act.
The
proposal would affect only the base stormwater rate, which pays for programs
and services. A separate, existing capital rate that finances stormwater
construction projects would remain unchanged. The two rates appear as a single
item on property tax statements every year.
