Veteran’s Assistance Office Moves to New Location

OLYMPIA – The Thurston County Veteran’s Assistance Office is now at a new location on the Courthouse Hill.  After many years in the Family Support Center in downtown Olympia, the Veteran’s Office is now located at 2404 Heritage Court SW in Olympia, near the intersection of Evergreen Park Drive and Cooper Point Road.

The Veteran’s Assistance program is a state mandated program run through Thurston County .  Washington law requires each county to establish a fund for needy veterans and their families and the families of deceased veterans. (RCW 73.08.010.)  The office has been providing help for an average of 85 persons a month for the last year or so.

There are various types of assistance available and it could include help for emergency needs such as shelter, utilities or food. The assistance may come in the form of a voucher. There is a dollar limit to the amount of assistance in a one-year period.

Veterans must meet certain criteria to be eligible for the assistance including Washington and Thurston County residency, proof of an honorable discharge, proof of need, low-income status and other qualifications.  Personnel at the office can explain the details.
