WasteMobile
Clears out Toxics
Tumwater-
Thurston
County
residents brought their household hazardous wastes to the Thurston County
WasteMobile last weekend, September 25th & 26th.
Residents from
Olympia
, Tumwater and Tenino came to the
Tumwater
High School
parking lot for Hazo Days, with the Thurston County WasteMobile.
The WasteMobile takes pesticides, paints, batteries, car fluids and
other hazardous products found in many households as a free service of the
Thurston County Solid Waste Division and Public Health and Social Services.
More than 220 households participated in the collection.
“We’re really glad to help,” said David Baker, the event
organizer and an Environmental Educator with the County.
“It’s great to see that people understand this stuff shouldn’t go
in their garbage, yard, or down the drain.
We cleared out some old and nasty chemicals this weekend.”
Six and a half tons of household hazardous products were
collected in the two days that the WasteMobile operated.
The largest categories of products were motor oil, paints, and
pesticides.
The WasteMobile made its first visit to Tumwater in 2002.
The WasteMobile has also visited locations in
Olympia
, Yelm, Grand Mound, and
Rainier
. The purpose of the WasteMobile
is to provide convenient service for proper disposal and recycling of
household hazardous products. More
than 2,400 residents have brought in over 60 tons of hazardous materials
collected since 2000, when the first WasteMobile event was held in
Rainier
. The next WasteMobile event will be held in Yelm next spring.
More details will be announced after the first of the year.
Area residents can bring household hazardous products,
free, any time of year to HazoHouse at the Thurston County Waste and
Recovery
Center
off Interstate 5 at exit 111. HazoHouse
is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 8:00 to 5:00.
