WasteMobile Clears out Household Toxics

Yelm – Hundreds of Thurston County residents brought their household hazardous wastes to the Thurston County WasteMobile this past weekend, April 29th, 30th and May 1st.  Residents from the Yelm area came to the QFC parking lot for Hazo Days, with the Thurston County WasteMobile.  The WasteMobile takes pesticides, paints, batteries, car fluids and other hazardous products found in many households as a free service of the county’s Solid Waste Division and Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.

Nearly 250 households participated in the collection.  “We’re really glad to help,” said David Baker, the event organizer and an Environmental Educator with the county.  “It’s great to see that people understand this stuff shouldn’t go in their garbage, yard, or down the drain.  We cleared out some old and nasty chemicals this weekend. A big thank you to the folks in Yelm.”

Eight and a half tons of household hazardous products were collected in the three-day event.  The bulk of the products dropped off were batteries, motor oil, paints, and pesticides.

The WasteMobile made its first visit to Yelm in 2001.  The WasteMobile has also visited locations in Olympia , Tumwater, Tenino, Grand Mound, and Rainier .  The purpose of the WasteMobile is to provide convenient service for proper disposal and recycling of household hazardous products.  More than 2,600 residents have brought in over 69 tons of hazardous materials since 2000, when the first WasteMobile event was held in Rainier . The next WasteMobile will be held in the fall.

Residents can bring household hazardous products, free, any time of year to HazoHouse at the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center off Interstate 5 at exit 111.  HazoHouse is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 8:00 to 5:00.  For more information, call 360-357-2491 or the TDD line 754-2933.  Or check the website at http://www.co.thurston.wa.us/wwm/
