The Thurston County Recreation Services Department provides recreation programs and activities for people of different abilities. Our primary goal is to provide opportunities for learning and growth through the experience of recreation and leisure activities. We take pride working in partnership with the Cities of Olympia, Tumwater, and Lacey to provide activities and programs through Specialized Recreation.

These programs are designed to give persons with developmental and/or physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in events and activities within the community and surrounding area. Most are suitable for ages 16 and older and include day trips, monthly dances, bingo, Movie & Pizza Night, Dinner Club and fitness programs such as Walk About Club.

Volunteers are welcome to assist us in providing these opportunities. Please call for more information.

A link to our current brochure can be found on the right side of this page. General information on how to get started is below. Please see our current brochure for more detailed information.

Registration Information          (Back to Top)

Participant Profiles provide emergency contacts, health conditions, insurance and behavior information.
A current Participant Profile must be on file before registration in any program.
A new form must be completed every two years or when information changes.

All fees must be paid at the time of registration. For your convenience we accept Visa, MasterCard, cash and checks.
We do not accept phone registrations.

Late Pick Up fees will be charged for all participants picked up after a program has ended. Fees are assessed as follows:
16 - 30 minutes = $15, over 30 minutes = $30.  Staff will not supervise participants more than one hour past the programs end time.  NOTE - Thurston County Recreation staff arrive on site 15 minutes prior to the start of each program.

DDD Clients

Thurston County Recreation Services is a registered contractor with DSHS and is able to accept DDD respite funds for payment of activities. Contact your case manager for information.

If you have registered for a program and decide that you will not be attending, it is your responsibility to contact the Recreation Office three (3) business days prior to the program. If you do not notify the office you will be responsible for 100% of the program fee even if you do not attend.

You are responsible for paying any outstanding balances before registering for and/or participating in new activities.

Participant Needs          (Back to Top)

We strive to provide reasonable accommodations for all of our programs. However, there may be some trips that are not conducive for people who have limited mobility because of location or logistics. Please call prior to registration to see if the activity will work for you.

TCRS staff do not provide one-on-one attendant care for toileting, toilet transfers, feeding, and behavior management.
If you need this type of assistance during program hours you must provide an attendant. Registration fees for attendants may apply and are listed in the current brochure.
Attendants who accompany participants are required to register and  remain with their client for the duration of the program.

Volunteers are vital to the Specialized Recreation programs. We encourage parents, care providers, siblings, and students to volunteer. Please call for information.
