Professional Awards Presented to Thurston County Assessor’s Office

The International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) is globally recognized as the leader and pre-eminent source for innovation, education, and research in property appraisal, assessment administration, and property tax policy. The organization develops the standards, techniques, and procedures used to maintain accurate property values and provides research, professional training and technical assistance and research programs on property appraisal, assessment administration, and property tax policy.

IAAO annually recognizes contributions made by individuals and organizations that epitomize fulfillment of IAAO’s mission and has presented two prominent awards to the Thurston County Assessor’s Office:

The prestigious Public Information Award was accepted by Assessor Patricia Costello at the 2004 IAAO Annual Conference on behalf of the whole office. This award honors counties for outstanding achievement in communicating with citizens about assessment practices and programs. Thurston County was recognized for its outreach to the community through its website, community meetings, and publications.

The Distinguished Assessment Jurisdiction Award was presented to the Thurston County Assessor’s Office in 2006 at its 72nd Annual Conference. This award is conferred upon a national, state/provincial, regional, or local assessment agency that has recently instituted a technical, procedural, or administrative program. The improvement implemented by the jurisdiction is generally recognized as a component of a model assessment system and a contributing factor to equity in property taxation.

The Assessor’s Office in Thurston County was commended for its implementation of a Property Assessment Response and Education Program. This program streamlines how the office interacts with property owners with valuation concerns and how it prepares appeal responses sent to the Board of Equalization and the State Board of Tax Appeals.
