County Treasurer
The Treasurer serves as the banker for the county, accepting
deposits from local school and fire districts, the Port of Olympia,
Timberland Regional Library, Intercity Transit (IT), and numerous other
public service districts operating within the county. The Treasurer
invests the money not needed by those entities for immediate expenses
and pays interest on those balances. This represents a source of income
that is “non-tax” supported. The Treasurer manages the overall cash-flow
providing cash to pay bills of these organizations. During 2001, the
Treasurer accepted deposits and paid checks or warrants that totaled
over $1.8 billion and had an investment responsibility of over $250
million. On behalf of those organizations, the Treasurer also sends
annual bills for property taxes to every owner of real and personal
property in the county. The Treasurer is responsible for collecting
those taxes and distributing the money to the organizations for whom
it is collected.
