Explanatory Statement:

The Griffin School District seeks voter approval to authorize a School Safety, Technology, and Capital Projects Levy as adopted in Resolution 14-15-07 by the Griffin School Board of Directors.

If approved, Griffin seeks to enhance the safety and security of its facilities. The proposed school safety improvements include security cameras, an updated alarm system, integrated automatic door locks and training related to school safety. Additionally, levy proceeds support educational technology systems and other capital projects as found necessary by the Board of Directors. As a non-high school district, Griffin is required to pay for technology and capital improvements related to the continuing education of Griffin High School students attending Olympia School District high schools.

Current sources of revenue are not sufficient to allow for the required payments to Olympia School District or for upgrading Griffin School safety systems and related technology. The Griffin School Board is seeking voters’ permission to levy a tax to provide $550,000 per year for two years in Griffin’s Capital Project Fund commencing in 2015 for collection in 2016 and 2017.

Statement For:

Vote yes for Griffin School District’s Safety, Technology & Capital Projects Levy

In 2010, the Steamboat Community voted to approve a four-year Levy for Griffin School District. Funds from this levy were used to purchase new MacBook Pros for teachers and iPad Airs for student use in elementary classrooms and for each middle school student. Funds were also used to improve Griffin’s technology infrastructure and paid for technology and capital improvement costs associated with Olympia School District. This levy expired in 2014.

“Yes for Griffin Kids” is once again asking for your support. This new special levy will focus on Griffin school safety and security upgrades, Griffin technology maintenance as well as technology and capital improvements for Olympia School District High Schools. It is the goal of Griffin School to keep the tax rate as even or close to the same as the last levy. The rate per thousand for this levy is 0.581 of assessed valuation for both years of collection. The new two-year levy will be in the amount of $1,100,000.00; collecting $550,000 in 2016 and $550,000 in 2017.

Please vote yes for Griffin School District’s Safety, Technology and Capital Projects Levy. This will ensure the security and safety of Griffin students as well as continued support of 21st century technology and capital improvements that will follow our students through high school.
