Olympia School District No. 111 - School Board Director, District No. 3

School Districts - Thurston County is divided into nine separate school districts, each governed by a five-member board. The board’s responsibilities include: budget, policy development, curriculum approval, planning, and communications. School board directors delegate authority for day-to-day functions to professional staff; however, they may never delegate ultimate responsibility. Board members are elected in a nonpartisan general election by voters within that school district. They receive no salary. A board may approve a per diem compensation for its members for attending board meetings. In most districts, candidates must reside in the subdistrict for which they are seeking office. All candidates are elected by the voters of the entire school district.

All school district positions are nonpartisan.

Only voters residing within the Olympia School District will vote on this position.
Statements are written by the candidates, who are solely responsible for the contents therein.

It is a privilege to have served as a board member for the Olympia School District for the past five years. During this time the district has effectively and efficiently met the educational needs of our students despite tough budget choices. Much work remains and I ask for your support to continue this work.

In the coming years, we must align our curriculum with new state-mandated standards, implement the Teacher/Principal Evaluation Project and continue to maintain fiscal responsibility.

Spending time with teachers, administrators, support staff and students has been a highlight of my service. Community collaboration with the district is vital to the success of our students. I remain committed to meeting the academic, social, emotional and cultural needs of all students with the education they need to become successful citizens.

Since 1977 my wife Mary and I have opened up our home to countless families as a state licensed childcare playing a vital role in children’s early development. Building upon this emphasis on early childhood education my goal is to deliver quality education to every student through reduced elementary class sizes, full-day kindergarten, procuring resources to improve school safety, and more music and PE offerings.

I am committed to investing in At-Risk students, technology investments, and staff development. The K-4 math curriculum, athletics and activities, and a better public health nurse presence are priorities for me along with improved security.

Together we can make OSD number one in the state. I will pursue appropriate education funding, promote teacher/parent collaboration, and bring accountability to the Board. I am truly interested in devoting my time and talents to meeting this challenge, and I stand ready and willing to serve.

Ballots will begin arriving October 17, 2013. If you have not received your ballot by October 24,
