Yelm Community Schools - School Board Director, District No. 4

School Districts - Thurston County is divided into nine separate school districts, each governed by a five-member board. The board’s responsibilities include: budget, policy development, curriculum approval, planning, and communications. School board directors delegate authority for day-to-day functions to professional staff; however, they may never delegate ultimate responsibility. Board members are elected in a nonpartisan general election by voters within that school district. They receive no salary. A board may approve a per diem compensation for its members for attending board meetings. In most districts, candidates must reside in the subdistrict for which they are seeking office. All candidates are elected by the voters of the entire school district.

All school district positions are nonpartisan.

Only voters residing within the Yelm Community Schools District will vote on this position.
Statements are written by the candidates, who are solely responsible for the contents therein.

Like you, I care deeply about our schools. I’m proud of our accomplishments and understand the needs for the future. During my 28 years on the board, we have continued to improve technology throughout the district and focused our limited resources on instructional programs that have proven results. Our staff is dedicated. Our test scores are rising. We completed a $70 million construction project to accommodate growth while maintaining a solid financial base, even during the economic downturn.

Still, we have work to do. We need to improve student achievement and graduation rates and stay on course with educational reform. With the current economy, it is even more important to make sure every dollar spent benefits our students. With your help and your vote, I will continue working to improve education in Yelm.
