Centralia School District No. 401-L - School Board Director, Position No. 5

School Districts - Thurston County is divided into nine separate school districts, each governed by a five-member board. The board’s responsibilities include: budget, policy development, curriculum approval, planning, and communications. School board directors delegate authority for day-to-day functions to professional staff; however, they may never delegate ultimate responsibility. Board members are elected in a nonpartisan general election by voters within that school district. They receive no salary. A board may approve a per diem compensation for its members for attending board meetings. In most districts, candidates must reside in the subdistrict for which they are seeking office. All candidates are elected by the voters of the entire school district.

All school district positions are nonpartisan.

Only voters residing within the Centralia School District will vote on this position.

I have served on the Centralia School Board for 15 years. I am a member of the Career and Technical Education Advisory Group and have participated in the mission and long range planning process with three superintendents. I believe that strong community support is important for good student education and success. As a member of the school board, I have been part of the team that has been a good fiscal steward of the district’s resources in financially challenging times.

I have worked for 30 years as a physical therapist at Providence Hospital where I have done therapy at Centralia schools in the past. Each of my 3 children completed all of their basic education in the Centralia School District where they participated in the gifted program, vocational courses and athletics. I understand, value and will support the education of all students including vocational education and college prep.

I have a sincere interest in public education. Having been a substitute teacher for the past 16 years in the Centralia School District, and having done several long-term substitute assignments, I have first-hand knowledge of the classroom experience. This knowledge is invaluable in governing our school district. I feel that mine will be a strong voice in advocating for the education of all our students to improve student learning. I will be a good listener to multiple approaches in decision-making. I believe all children can experience educational success given strong parental support and effective, passionate, and creative teaching.

I’m running for the Centralia School Board to continue my contribution to education. I’ve been an educator for 34 years. I have been the principal of an award winning elementary school, Edison Elementary, and believe I can offer the school system ideas on how to best address the needs of Centralia’s students. Edison has been recognized as “exemplary” a number of years by the state board of education and OSPI. Edison has won two state academic achievement awards and a federal Title I award.

I’ve also been involved in education finance issues and legislative initiatives, particularly school levy equalization, which has lowered required tax rates for rural school levies while providing state matching dollars for the schools.
