United Way Day of Caring 2011

A fantastic team of Thurston County employees participated in the United Way Day of Caring on Friday, September 23. Day of Caring is an annual event where hundreds of volunteers from throughout Thurston County join a local nonprofit and other community organizations to work on service projects. Participating organizations are matched with volunteers who give their time, talents and services to make a hands-on difference in our community.

Our task was to help the good folks at Heartstrides Therapeutic Riding & Horsemanship clean up their trails so that the horses and their walkers have plenty of room to roam and explore! We cleared LOTS of Scotch broom and tansy ragwort and also made sure the paths were free from rocks, branches, and exposed roots. We also took time to learn about Heartstrides' program and visit with the horses! A special thanks goes to Carrie Wack, Heartstrides boardmember and employee of the Thurston County Auditor's Office, for helping arrange this special day. Also, we'd like to thank Kristy Dees, owner and operator of the ranch, for hosting us and teaching us about the positive work she and her team of volunteers do to empower individuals with special needs and our community through the horse and human relationship.
