Sherri McDonald announced that Pat Libbey was attending a Statewide Performance Standards meeting and not able to be at the meeting.
Ms. McDonald introduced WIC Program Supervisor Bernita LaCroix. Ms. LaCroix reported that the Thurston County WIC Program received the following statewide awards at a recent WIC Conference:
Individual Excellence WIC Employee Award to Kari Krausmann, for the breast pump loaner program.
Creativity in Nutrition Education, for the "Bee Iron Smart" interactive bulletin board..
Clinic with the Most Innovative Breast Feeding Program, for "Breast Feeding the Gold Standard" outreach to improve relations with physicians in the community by providing reference materials, etc.
Commissioner Wilson stated she was impressed with the breast feeding awareness recently observed in the community. Commissioner Wilson also suggested information be shared with pharmacists.
Art Starry provided an overview of Site Hazard Assessment Grant proposal. This two year grant will continue the Health Departmentís capacity to investigate drug labs, perform initial investigations and carry out site hazard assessments of contaminated sites. In addition, the grant will support staff review of clean up plans as well as provide time to do multi-parcel site hazard assessments and continue to oversee home heating oil tank removals and sampling assistance. Chairman Oberquell asked questions concerning the grant budget. Staff responded and agreed to provide Commissioner Oberquell with additional information on the budget.
Gerald Tousley provided a brief overview of Drug Lab investigations statewide. When discussion was complete, Commissioner Wilson MOVED TO AUTHORIZE THE DIRECTOR OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT TO SUBMIT THE SITE HAZARD ASSESSMENT GRANT FOR 2001-2002. Chairman Oberquell SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED.

Dr. Diana Yu reported on a new meningitis case.
Dr. Yu also indicated there has been no influenza activity reported as yet. The Department has received a partial shipment of flu vaccine. Commissioner Oberquell restated her concern that physicians and medical clinics should get vaccine before grocery stores do. Dr. Yu explained her understanding of the process used for distributing the flu vaccine by the pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Dr. Yu also discussed a tuberculosis case with the Board.
