The What, Where, Why and How of Thurston County's Pet Control Zones

bulletThe Animal Control Code:

Chapter 9.10 of the Thurston County Code applies to animal control in unincorporated Thurston County. The purpose of the code is to regulate dogs and other pet animals in the county.

The Code requires that all dogs in the County and all cats in pet control zones must be licensed.

A provision of the code allows for the establishment of Pet Control Zones by defining areas in which it is unlawful to allow the dog to leave the owner's property without a leash, or permit cats to trespass onto property where they are not welcome.

bulletWhat is a Pet Control Zone?

Dogs must be physically confined to their property.

If the dog leaves the property it must be on a leash or under voice command.

Cats are not permitted to trespass onto property where they are not welcome.

bulletWho Has Dog Restraint (Leash) Laws?

The cities of Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater have restraint laws that are similar in purpose to Thurston County's Pet Control Zones. Animal Services provides enforcement of these laws.

Yelm, Tenino, and Rainier also have restraint laws, which are enforced by their city authorities.
