 Prairie Appreciation Day!

Hundreds visit special preserve.

More than 1,200 people of all ages basked in the sunlight at the county’s Glacial Heritage Preserve on the 17th Annual Prairie Appreciation Day, May 12. Activities included guided prairie wildflower walks, a native plant sale, hay rides, and displays on prairie birds and butterflies, geology, wildlife, invasive plants, and prairie restoration efforts.

The annual event is produced through the efforts of 200 staff and volunteers from more than a dozen private and public agencies including the Thurston County Parks and Recreation Department. Next year’s appreciation day is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, 2013. Details are available at Prairie Appreciation Days.

See you then!

In the first photo- Young visitors examine prairie flowers with complementary magnifying glasses. In the second photo- Two of the day's many birdwatchers zero in on a hawk. And in the third photo- Local scouts make seedballs at one of the day's many activity sites.
