Little Red School House Benefits Local Families

Thurston County employees dig deep to help out

Thousands of Thurston County kids were the recipients of school supplies and clothes recently thanks to the annual Little Red School House (LRSH) drive. For more than 20 years, folks have donated school supplies, cash and clothing for LRSH, which are in turn, given to local families to make sure their children get off on the right foot when classes resume. Estimates show that more than 3,200 kids received assistance this time around.

Thurston County employees play a significant role in the Little Red School House drive. This year they donated nearly $3,700 in cash. That’s out of an estimated $35,000 worth of backpacks and other school supplies. Other donations from county employees included-

  • 42 backpacks
  • 41 packages of pencils,
  • 6 packages of markers,
  • 51 boxes of crayons,
  • 31 packages of paper,
  • 41 binders
  • Dozens and dozens of rulers, scissors, bottles of glue and other types of supplies

A special thank you goes to County Manager Don Krupp, who was the winner of this year’s pie in the face contest. At a dollar a vote, Don received 149 votes for being willing to take one for the kids! Auditor Kim Wyman was a close second with 112 votes. All of the money raised went to the Little Red School House project.

Thanks to the many Thurston County employees who donated cash and supplies to make this a special school year for hundreds of local families!
