Sheriff’s Civil Division Provides Many Services.

Warrants, orders, permits and more!

For those who have never had to use the services of the Sheriff’s Civil Division, this branch provides those functions that are designated by State Statute as office responsibilities.

Civil Processes:
We have two civil specialists, who are responsible for the processing and service of court ordered matters. These orders range from Writs Of Replevin (Court ordered recovery of property), Protection Orders, Restraining Orders, Evictions, and any other order issued by the courts that we are required to serve. Another critical area is in sales. When a plaintiff receives a judgment involving real property or personal property, we are required to process these within a designated time frame. This involves making sure the dollar amounts are correct, the proper publications take place, a levy is done, and postings are undertaken. There are some other factors as well which vary by the sale being conducted. They also process and send out all of the court’s witness subpoenas that must be served personally. In 2012, these two specialists processed a total of 7,762 of these various orders.

Warrants Processes:
Another key area of the Civil Division is the processing of arrest warrants. We normally have between 4,000 and 5,000 warrants on hand, with two full time warrant specialists to process them. In 2012 the Warrants section processed a total total of 9,360 warrants.

Firearms Permitting and Transfers:
We have one full time Firearms Specialist. This has been the area that we have seen the most rapid growth in. There are several factors that drives this including the uncertain economy and concerns about gun rights. Besides processing background checks for Concealed Pistol Licenses, we also provide the same background checks for the Gun Transfers that require it. As in the other processes that are performed in the Civil Division, these may require research of several data bases, which takes time. This can be slow if any findings are discovered which necessitates further checking. Suppressor applications and Gun Dealer Licenses are also processed by this section. Another component is the fingerprinting of all the new CPL applicants. In 2012, this section processed a total of 13,669 requests.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office strives to provide the highest standard of service to the public. We will continue to work to meet the needs of our public.
