 Adoption Day Celebration

Families adopt children as part of special ceremonies

Adoptions are usually private affairs but in observance of National Adoption Day, six Olympia area families recently adopted a total of 10 children at Thurston County Family Court. This is the 10th year of the local ceremonies. Superior Court Judge Anne Hirsch says the idea is to bring awareness to the adoption process. “This event helps spread the word that there are children in the foster care system that all need that ‘forever’ home and are waiting to be adopted.”

But Judge Hirsch noted that adoptions are in decline in Thurston County. In 2011 there were 113 adoptions. In 2012 there were 82 adoptions and so far in 2013 there have been 67 adoptions. Hirsch said that across Washington, more than 9,800 children are in foster care, and of those, more than 1,500 have legally lost their biological parents due to various factors.

Among those who spoke during the Adoption Day ceremonies were Joe and Lisa Rehberger. Lisa told the packed court room that adopting a child from the foster care system can be very emotional, but very also very rewarding. They have adopted two girls- Teresa, 4, and Rosa, 2. Their new daughters have two older brothers, Luke, 10 and Dominic, 8. Luke spoke of his sister Rosa. “She’s almost always smiling, and when she’s smiling, the rest of us have to, too.” If you would like to find out more about adoptions, please visit this page on the Department of Social and Health Services web site.
