Thurston County Commissioners honor local Rotary Clubs

Thurston County Rotary clubs were recently recognized by Thurston County Commissioners for “Service Above Self”. Commissioners adopted a proclamation honoring the nine Rotary chapters in the county for the 109th anniversary of the founding of Rotary International.

Port Commissioner and Rotarian Bill McGregor accepted the proclamation on behalf of the 700 members in the Thurston County chapters. He noted that the clubs support dozens of charitable and community programs including the Boys and Girls Clubs, South Sound Reading Foundation, Safeplace, Scholarships and Student Exchange Programs just to name a few.

Rotary International also supports worldwide causes including clean water programs in Africa and the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. With assistance from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary has helped to limit polio to only three countries and the world and may be able to eliminate it altogether within three years.

In part, the county proclamation reads-

Whereas, Rotary International is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provide humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps to build goodwill and peace in the world; and

Whereas, the following nine Rotary Clubs of Thurston County are a part of Rotary International: Rotary Clubs of Gateway, Hawks Prairie, Lacey, Olympia, Olympia Capital Centennial, South Puget Sound, Tumwater, West Olympia, and Yelm. All have practiced the Rotary Motto of “Service above Self”…………..

….NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Board of Thurston County Commissioners hereby recognizes the Rotary Clubs of Thurston County for their accomplishments, improvements and contributions to the betterment of our society by adopting this proclamation on behalf of all citizens of our community.
