 Yelm Highway Improvement Project Update.

Roadway work hits one-year mark.

One of the biggest public works projects in Thurston County history passes the one-year mark in June. Estimated completion, dependent on weather and other factors, is the end of this year. The improved roadway between Rich Road and Henderson Boulevard will provide a safer, more efficient transportation corridor with the following features:

  • Two travel lanes in each direction, sidewalks and bike lanes.
  • Two roundabouts, one at Boulevard Road and one at Brassfield Street.
  • Planter strips and islands in some locations and sound walls.
In conjunction with the county project, the City of Olympia is upgrading sewer and water utilities in the area.

As of June 1, installation of the sewer and water system is about 65% complete. We estimate this phase of construction to conclude by the end of July, dependent on weather and other factors. The intersection of Boulevard and Yelm Highway is the critical intersection of the project corridor. Construction of a roundabout at this location, beginning in June, will result in significant delays. We encourage travelers to check the project blog (link below) for alternate routes.
