 Veterans’ Assistance Fund Provides Help.

Consider service on the Veterans’ Advisory Board.

The Veterans’ Assistance Fund is a county program providing assistance to veterans in our local community. You may be able to help eligible veterans and also help fill vacancies on the advisory board. The program is administered by Public Health and Social Services and assists indigent veterans and their families and deceased veterans and their families with basic needs such as rent, mortgage, utilities, transportation, food, clothing, and burial costs. The maximum assistance provided in a year is $800 for a family of two or more.

The program exists in each county of the state and is authorized by state statute. Counties are required to use a small portion of the county property tax to fund the program. The program also provides funding for shelter beds for homeless veterans and reintegration services for veterans incarcerated in the county corrections’ facility.

The Thurston County Veterans’ Advisory Board provides advice to the Board of County Commissioners on the best programs to offer. This is a seven member advisory board in which the majority of the members are representatives of local veterans’ service organizations.

If you are working with veterans or their family members who may be in need of assistance with basic needs please have them contact the Veterans’ Assistance Fund at 360-867-2625, or visit the Public Health and Social Services Veterans’ Assistance Fund Program website for more information.

There are currently two vacancies on the Veterans’ Advisory Board. These appointments are for veterans who reside in Thurston County. Appointments are for three year terms. The advisory board meets quarterly; normally on the first Monday of January, April, July and October between 6 PM and 8 PM at Public Health and Social Services.
