New - Healthy Homes Program Starting!

How is the quality of your indoor air?

A new program to provide free healthy home assessments and spread the word about indoor air quality is starting in January! Healthy Homes volunteers participate in 30 hours of training and then complete 30 hours of Healthy Homes community service. You don't need to be a health care provider, a building specialist, or an expert in anything. We look for diverse individuals who are committed to actively participating in the training sessions and who will volunteer in their communities. We want people who will enjoy working together to improve their own and others' health.

All of our volunteers perform Healthy Home visits in the community. During the visit, a pair of volunteers meets with the resident and walks with them through their home, addressing ways the resident can reduce their exposure to toxins, asthma triggers, mold, and other housing-related health risks. They may also help staff booths at fairs and other community events, do presentations, work on special projects such as one with childcare providers, or write articles for community newsletters. We encourage our volunteers to be creative with their outreach ideas. We will do what we can to support your efforts to become a successful volunteer.

Hands-on training begins Thursday, Jan 19, 2012 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm and continues every Thursday evening until March 22. Sessions are held at the Thurston County Public Health and Social Services Department at 412 Lilly Rd. NE, Olympia, 98506; across from St. Peter’s Hospital.
