ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE NEXT EARTHQUAKE?

Most Thurston County residents were relatively lucky when the 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck on February 28th, but we might not get off so easy next time.  That’s why it’s so important to prepare before the next big earthquake hits.  Emergency planners and the Red Cross recommend several steps for families to take including-

ü      Get to know the emergency plans for your school and workplace.

ü      Update or create an emergency plan for your home including an out-of-state phone contact and local meeting places.

ü      Conduct a hazard review of your worksite and home, and secure appliances, equipment and other objects that may fall or collapse in an earthquake.

ü      Place heavy objects on lower shelves.

ü      Know how to turn off your utilities including natural gas and electricity.

Families should also equip the home with a disaster supply kit containing items that would be needed if outside help were not forthcoming for three days.  Items for the kit include-

Ø     One gallon of water per person per day.

Ø     Enough non-perishable food for each person for 72 hours.

Ø     A first aid kit and any prescription medications that might be needed.

Ø     Battery powered radio, flashlights, and extra batteries.

Ø     Fire extinguisher.

Ø     Extra food, water and supplies for pets.

Additional assistance with earthquake preparedness can be obtained from the Red Cross at 352-8585, and at local branches of the Timberland Regional Library.
