Big Brothers Big Sisters

BBBS has been providing mentoring services in the Rochester area since the 2001 school year.

 Accomplishments/Highlights include:

  • In partnership with the Boys & Girls Club, BBBS provided “Bigs” for
    children enrolled in the ROOF Community Services Summer Program.
    The “Bigs” recruited were the Club’s summer Junior Staff.

  • BBBS provided a school based mentoring program with a Part-time
    Mentoring Site Coordinator and 50 High School teens as “Bigs” in 2007.
     “Bigs” walk to their Little’s school to meet with them for an hour during the
     school day one day a week.

  • BBBS has been named one of the top 10 violence prevention programs
    in America by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence,
    Institute of Behavioral Science , University of Colorado .

ROOF Community Services

ROOF receives Weed & Seed funding support for Kids’ Place, which is an after-school and summer program for 50 at-risk children, and for family education programming. 

Kids’ Place.

The main focus of Kids’ Place is academic tutoring, including homework help, reading, and math skills. 

For the 2006/2007 school year:

  • 100% of children qualified for free or reduced school lunch.

  • 50% of children lived in a home where English is not the primary language.

  • 42% received special services such as ELL (English Language Learner),
    LAP (Learning Assistance Program), or have an IEP (Individualized
    Education Plan).

  • All children enrolled improved their STAR Reading score.

  • At the beginning of the year, 23% of children enrolled in Kids’ Place were reading at grade level. 

  • By the end of Kids’ Place, 47% of children were reading at grade level.

Family Education

  • Family education funding has been used to offer parenting classes at
    ROOF. 

  • Classes are free and include a family meal and childcare. 

  • Classes have been offered on parenting young children and adolescents. 

  • Since 2004, 92 parents have attended family education classes.

ROOF also provides a food bank; Hispanic Outreach; Community Projects
such as Operation Santa and Back to School Supplies; and emergency
services.
