Board of Health

In Washington State, there are 35 local health jurisdictions (LHJ's). The Thurston County Public Health & Social Services Department is the local government entity or LHJ serving Thurston County. Local boards of health are described in Washington State law as the governing boards for LHJ's across the state.

The Thurston County Board of Health is comprised of the three currently elected Thurston County Commissioners. The Board of Health oversees efforts to improve the public's health by providing leadership that shapes the Department's approach to public health policies and programs.

Board Priorities

In 2011 the Thurston County Board of Health, who also serve as the Board of County Commissioners, considered a wide variety of issues.  After much discussion and consideration of health data for Thurston County, the Board declared the following as priorities and re-affirmed them for 2012:
  • Healthy Living - Reduction and cessation of tobacco product use.
  • Chronic Disease Prevention - Access to healthy food and a community environment that supports safe physical activity.
  • Access to Care - Address opportunities created through federal health care reform.
  • Protect the Environment - Reduce pollution (air, water, food and land) to protect the public's health.
