Each day in the United States more than 3200 kids, 18 years or younger, smoke their first cigarette. 

Preventing youth tobacco use is critical.  We know that nearly 90% of adult cigarette smokers first tried smoking by age 18 and 99% first tried smoking by age 26.

Nicotine in tobacco products is addictive.  Youth can become addicted quickly.  The younger youth are when they start using tobacco, the more likely they’ll be addicted.  Learn more about addiction here.

In Washington State laws prohibit minors from purchasing or possessing tobacco products including products like e-cigarettes.  The goal of these laws is to stop the early initiation of tobacco use.
