THURSTON THRIVES

COMMUNITY DESIGN

purpose/scope:

The Community Design Action Team meets regularly to develop strategies and recommendations on how best to create or re-design community environments so that they make healthy choices easier. Examples of the ways in which our built environment shapes health include whether it provides opportunities for regular, moderate physical activity and healthy eating. Our community’s design can also affect how much air pollution is generated and how safe we are from crime or injuries.

A current focus of efforts is on achieving improvements along the regional trails system as a recognized finalist in the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge. The team is working with a variety of partners and volunteers to complete a walkshed analysis which measures the access to the trail system from nearby housing and destinations like employment to determine where new access paths, benches or signage may be needed.

The team’s strategy map was developed in 2013-2014 and presented in mid-2014 to the Board of Health and Thurston Thrives Advisory Council.
