Samuel R. Thurston. Born in 1816 in Maine, Samuel Thurston attended Maine Wesleyan Seminary, Dartmouth College, and graduated from Bowdoin College. He arrived in Oregon in 1847 and was elected as the Oregon Territory's first delegate to Congress in 1849. During his stay in Congress, he pushed through the Donation Land Claim Law and accomplished many other achievements during this time. In 1851, on his journey back out to Oregon, he died at the age of 35 while crossing the Isthmus of Panama. Thurston County was created on January 12, 1852, and was eventually named in memory of Samuel R. Thurston.
