Juvenile  Court  -  Detention  Services

Detention Options Program

The Options Program at Thurston County Detention teaches and promotes the following skills in students enrolled in this program.

Anger Management

Material presented to the student is based on the Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) model with a few additions such as role-plays.  Students learn the importance of identifying and coping with their personal triggers, identifying the causes of conflict, identifying their needs and the needs of the person with whom they are having conflict, the art of compromising, the importance of time-outs and planning, and the consequences of their actions in the real world.

Empathy

Students understand that their careless or illegal actions hurt real people.  Students will learn how their behaviors impact family members, peers, people they have to deal with on an every day basis.  They learn to see that their behavior causes certain reactions from others.  They learn that their actions can have long term negative consequences.  Students learn to understand how the impact of various crimes affects victims.

Social Skills

Basic social skills are encouraged and taught.  Being polite, respectful, classroom social skills, learning what it takes to get along with others.  Positive examples are encouraged and reinforced.

Personal Responsibility

A great deal of emphasis is placed on teaching students that they are ultimately responsible for the consequences of their words and actions.  When a student acts out in class we use that opportunity as a teaching experience.  We use the MRT program, "Character Development" as one of the components to teach will-power, self-control, goal-setting, and how to change habits.

Communication Skills

Many of the students that enter our programs believe that if they are the loudest in a conflict or if they just ignore the conflict that everything will work out for them.  We teach students that one of the most important aspects of communication is listening, that many conflicts start with a misunderstanding.  If you reduce the misunderstandings, you reduce the number of conflicts.

Self Esteem

We often see students who have to prove they are not afraid to do anything: drugs, alcohol, sex, fighting, to get respect.  We strive to teach our students that what they believe about themselves is more important than what peers believe.  Once they believe in themselves, they don't have to "prove" themselves.

Refusal Skills

Students who believe in themselves, that have self-confidence, have an easier time saying "no" to behaviors that get them into trouble.

Thinking Past "Now"

Intertwined through all the programs taught is the message that a student needs to think about the ramifications of all of their actions.  We spend a lot of time discussing the ramifications of both positive and negative behavior.
