Black River-Mima Prairie Glacial Heritage Preserve

The Black River-Mima Prairie Glacial Heritage Preserve, known as Glacial Heritage, is an excellent example of the Puget Prairie ecosystem which greeted the settlers of the 1800’s.  Only 2.6% of this type ecosystem still exists. Thurston County Parks and Recreation Department was fortunate to acquire this unique property. With the exception of Thurston County Parks sponsored events, the park is currently closed to public use. Arrangements may be made in advance to access this site for educational or environmental activities. Requests should be made by contacting the Parks Department (360) 786-5595.

Bull Elk on the prairie at Glacial Heritage

This bachelor band of bull elk was sited in Glacial Heritage after their migration down from the snowy Black Hills to the lower elevation prairie and foothills. As days lengthen and warmer spring weather arrives, these elk may move back to higher elevations where rich forage, cool breezes and fewer insects abound.
