Thurston County Public Works

We share a vision of the Public Works Department as an organization that cares about its employees, its constituents, its mission and the environment; an organization that values honesty, integrity, and open communication; one committed to getting the job done right, on time, within budget, and in the public interest.
- Lester Olson, Director

Thurston County Public Works Department is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance and improvement of more than 1,000 miles of county roadway, and adjacent right-of-way.

Our crews respond to emergency situations resulting from natural disasters such as flooding and earthquakes to assist county residents in evacuation and access, and property protection. Additionally, we provide sanding, plowing, and de-icing services of county roads during the winter season.

Public Works is also responsible for the management of the Waste and Recovery Center (WARC), Emergency Operations, Utilities, and maintenance of the County park system.
