The state Department of Health declares certain areas of Henderson Inlet and Nisqually Reach off limits to commercial shellfish harvesting due to fecal coliform bacterial contamination.

State and local agencies begin to develop a response strategy to address the contamination problem.

County begins community outreach to guide formation of shellfish protection district.

First Open House: General overview and information sharing.

Area residents continue to work with officials to guide creation of a protection district, including the size of the district, water quality programs and activities, and funding sources.

Second workshop: Draft of district options. Community work continues.

Public meeting: Review proposed shellfish work program.

Public meeting: Review draft ordinances.

Public hearing before Thurston County Commissioners was held Dec. 11. Commissioners approved ordinances on Dec. 17.

Thurston County submits three Coastal Zone Management Grant Applications: two for planning shellfish protection districts, the third to reduce fecal coliform bacteria from dogs.
