Fiscal
Manager Joan Plaja moved to Thurston County in 1972 from Butte, Montana.
She started working for Thurston County in 1985 when she was hired by
Thurston County Employment and Training as an Accountant. While employed
there, she attended South Puget Sound Community College to hone her
accounting and computer skills. In 1992 she was hired by Thurston County
Sheriff’s Office as a Financial Operation’s Supervisor where she
supervised the accounting staff. In 2007 she was appointed by Sheriff
Dan Kimball to the position of Fiscal Manager and then in 2011 she was
appointed by Sheriff John Snaza to serve as Fiscal Manager.
Fiscal Manager Plaja’s primary responsibility is the development,
coordination, and maintenance of the Sheriff’s budget, which also
includes administering grants and contracts. Joan also manages and
directs the office’s entire accounting and financial functions, and she
plans, organizes, and supervises the work of assigned staff.
Joan likes to fish and hike with her husband Mike and enjoys spending
time with family and friends.
