What Is Exploring?

 

The Sheriff's Office Explorer Post is designed to give youth opportunities to serve their community, experience different areas of local law enforcement, and to develop skills related to leadership and discipline. The Post also promotes positive interactions between youth and police as well as provides constructive, supervised activities for its members. The Sheriff's Office Explorer Post encourages those members who are in school to maintain good grades and to pursue higher education.

What Type of Training will I Get?


As an Explorer, you will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about various aspects of law enforcement. You will be required to attend a one week academy within one year of being selected as an Explorer.

Subjects of focus include:

  • Collision Investigation
  • Arrest Techniques
  • First-Aid
  • Traffic Stops
  • Physical Training
  • Firearms Safety
  • Patrol Procedures
  • Traffic Control
  • Crime Prevention
What Are Membership Requirements?
 
  • Be of good moral character
  • Between the ages of 14 to 20
  • Must be currently enrolled in high school, home-schooled, have a High School diploma or G.E.D
  • Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA
  • No serious police record - must pass a limited background check
  • Willing to attend bi-monthly meetings
  • Willing to participate in activities/details associated with the Post
When and Where are Meetings?
 

Thursday meetings (first, third, and fifth Thursdays of each month) at 7:00 pm.
Twin Star Credit Union, upper floor.
2400 Evergreen Park Drive SW, West Olympia
 (2 blocks from the Thurston County Courthouse)

The Explorer Advisors are all full-time commissioned deputy sheriffs within the Sheriff’s Office who volunteered to lead the post.
