The
Detective Division is the investigative branch of the
Sheriff’s Office. There
are currently twenty commissioned officers within the
Detective Division; one Captain, one Lieutenant, two
Sergeants, two Evidence Detectives, twelve Case
Detectives, and four Support Staff. This
division is responsible for conducting follow up
investigations into serious matters. Typically
the type of cases followed up can be classified as
either property or person crimes:
-
Property
Crime involves burglary, theft, auto theft, forgery,
fraud, malicious mischief and arson to mention a
few.
- Person
Crime involves homicide, assaults, robbery,
kidnapping, sexual assault, hate crimes and any
other crime involving a person central to the crime.
Within
the Detective Division there are four sub units which
are designed for specialty investigations. They are the Sexual
Offender Registration Unit (SOR),
the Evidence Unit, the Special Victims
Unit (SVU),
and the Major
Crimes Unit.
-
The
SOR Unit is responsible for registering the
convicted sexual offenders and conducting community
notification when required. Furthermore,
this unit conducts necessary enforcement action when
violations occur. There are two Detectives assigned
to this unit.
-
The
Evidence unit is responsible for processing major
crime scenes, analyzing evidence and coordinating
with the Washington State Crime Lab. They
are also responsible for conducting public auctions
of unclaimed and/or seized items. This
unit is comprised of a Sergeant and two Evidence
Detectives.
-
The
Special Victims Unit is a group of four Detectives
working jointly on crimes against children,
vulnerable adults, as well as victims of sexual
assault and domestic violence. The
"team" approach affords a greater
opportunity for Detectives to limit trauma to
victims, as well as increase the chances of solving
these serious incidents.
- The
Major Crimes Unit consists of a core group of 4-6
Detectives who will investigate "major
crimes” such as Homicides, violent assaults, Arson
and robberies.
For the
2007 year, Sheriff’s Office Detectives will conduct
primary or follow-up investigations on approximately
2000 cases. These
cases will have been scrutinized for solvability factors
prior to assignment. Though
limits as to what can be followed up are a modern day
reality, the Sheriff’s Office takes all cases
seriously and continues to strive towards improving the
important service we provide for the public we serve.
The
Detective Division also places a high regard on the need
to be preventative in dealing with crime.
Therefore a strong emphasis is placed on having a
collaborative approach with other law enforcement and
relevant governmental entities, as well as with our
community partners and the citizens we serve. Many
detectives are involved in such efforts, exemplified by
their involvement with the Identity Theft/Fraud Task
Force, Domestic Violence Task Force, the Sexual Assault
Task Force, the Vulnerable Adult Task Force, the
Children’s Justice and Advocacy Center, and the
Rochester "Weed and Seed" program, just to
name a few. They
also put in many hours performing community
presentations on a myriad of local crime related topics,
in an effort to reduce the likelihood of our citizens
becoming crime victims.
